Did she use a transfer pen like this?
This is a pretty informative website

This is just a guess
Maybe she put the pages on the towel then put water on it.
Like a tattoo.

Maybe you press the coloring page to the towel and soak it in water ( I don’t really know for sure).

The process is similar to painting. My mother used to do this when I was a child. I remember all the crazy little drawings my mom had on the dish towells. I believe its a special fabric paint available in craft or sewing stores.

u can use those transfer pens…OR outline the page in crayon and iron CAREFULLY then u will have the outline to decorate from there

If it was Grandma, that may’ve been before the transfer pens. The hot-iron transfer pencils have been available longer and are still available now. I remember them in blue, red & yellow. The process is similar to the more-recent iron-on crayons, but the image is sharper.
I web-searched and found a source for them in blue and in yellow. Further inquiries may turn up the red also:

Use a spray bottle of water. Get the paper slightly damp. Then iron it on with the iron on cotton setting. The water should make the ink iron right on.

Another way is to scan the page and print it out on iron on computer paper, then iron on the towel.
